We are pleased to pose/answer some of the basic questions that need to be understood before you purchase your Multimedia Projector. The Data Projector market has shown staggering growth over the last two years. The worldwide volume growth has come from 210,000 units in 1996 to 747,000 in 1999. By 2001 we expect the market to have grown worldwide to 1,217,000 units.
In 1999 there were an estimated 1.4 million presentations given every working day!
QUESTION
: What is the difference between a Data Projector and a Multimedia Projector?ANSWER:
They are two names for the same product. You will also often see them referred to as LCD Projectors although, not all projectors use LCD technology.QUESTION:
Where do I start as there are so many different products on the market?ANSWER:
Go through the questionnaire below and this should focus you on what your needs are and what is important to you. Of course if you prefer give us a call and we will talk you through it.Mobility
1: Will you be travelling with your system?
If yes,
A. How often? B. By Car or Air? Will you; A. Always carry it on as "hand luggage"; B. Always check it as "baggage"; To be truly portable you need to go for a projector weighing less than
2.5kg's (Ultra, Ultra portable category. At this size they can be carried in
aircraft cabins. If you check it in you will need to purchase a Flight Case to ensure that it is not damaged in transit. Flight cases can be a good investment in any case as they protect you investment against the elements and with the price of bulbs they can pay for themselves very quickly. There are many projectors now weighting under 4kg's. Last year the ultra
portable range were classed as under 5Kg. this shows how fast the market is
changing. Ultra portables are generally slightly cheaper and more powerful than
the Ultra, Ultra portable market. If you are using it mainly on the road, say giving presentations of your products at your customers premises you will probably need to bring a screen and all the equipment with you. If this is the case you should consider going for a projector which has a PCMCIA card
reader (In 2000 it is mainly Sanyo who offer this option as Mitsubishi have
discontinued it on their new model. Basically this means that you do not need your laptop as the presentation is stored on disk. There are some trade off’s in that sound is not going to work if you use this method and the animations in Powerpoint will not work but compared to OHP slides you get colour and the professional image of clicking a button when you want the next slide to appear. If this is how you work you must check out our new mobile SCREENS with the type "S" weighting only 1.2 kg, (yes this is not a typing error only 1.2 kg.) If you are not intending to move the projector from one room then ceiling mounting is an effective method and you will find the price of all the accessories in our 93 page catologue available on request or call us for a price.
In general the SVGA/XGA cable should not exceed 10M otherwise you will need
signal boosters which adds to the cost. What resolution
If you and other users currently have VGA or SVGA laptops, how long before you expect to move to newer XGA laptops (as of April 2000 nearly all laptops being sold today are XGA.
Note: This is a particularly important question. If you plan to replace in the next year or so you need to consider these points carefully. However nearly all projectors do have the ability to compress the image and move one spec upwards. However if you are presenting detailed figures then you may not be happy with the results. For general presentations you are not likely to have a problem. It is still possible to reduce the resolution on the lap top to 800x600(SVGA) and this will work well as long as you do not mind the constant changing of the resolution.
In summary go for the most up to date resolution that you can afford as it will ultimately last longer and the higher the resolution the better the fine detail will appear. There is of course the trade off in the price differential between SVGA and XGA. You will also see that in general the XGA have more Lumens (Brightness).
You can still turn the resolution on windows down to VGA and if budget is tight and you only run standard Powerpoint and one person is going to use the machine then even if you have an XGA laptop you would still be happy with an SVGA projector.
4. What is the typical audience size and room size?
1. What is the largest audience, screen size and/or room size?
2. How often will the largest (most challenging) environments be used?
If say you only give a presentation once a year to an audience of 200 plus and the usual size is less than 50 you would probably be better off hiring from us on the one occasion you need a higher spec machine as, the cost of the projector would be far more than a once a year hire fee. In our printed catalogue you will see that we have used symbols to indicate the maximum number of people we recommend for each projector. If you want further guidance please give us a call or use the contact button at the top or bottom of this page.

. How important are the "Lumens"This does give an idea of the potential of the projector although as you will read in the PC Magazine tests many manufacturers exaggerate by up to 30%. Whilst this would not be acceptable in the motor industry in this sector tests often do not match claims. This is the reason that we have included a link to independent tests as this will give you the true performance of the projector that you believe suits your needs
The Table below indicated the actual figures for market share by lumens to 99 and the expected outcomes for 2000 and 2001.
| Lumens | 1998 | 1999 | 2000 E | 2001 E |
| <600 | 35% | 18% | 10% | 5% |
| 600<1000 | 54% | 41% | 36% | 34% |
| 1000<1500 | 9% | 29% | 39% | 44% |
| 1500+ | 2% | 12% | 15% | 17% |
.The indications are that by the year 2001- 61% of projectors sold will be over 1,000 lumens. In 1999 41% were over 1000 lumens. The big change is the sub 600 lumens market. The simple reason for this being that prices have tumbled and lumens have increased. Therefore companies can afford better equipment and there are very few products left in the under 600 range.
As ever what other people do is not paramount. The performance imperatives are that what you buy will do the job that you need it to do and that those needs are not likely to change in the near future. Many firms are still using their VGA projectors and are happy with them.6 How important is "ease of use"
- some projectors are just plain easier to get up and running. Most these days have "Plug and Play" capability in that they automatically set the projector up to match the signal source. However there can be a need to adjust sometimes and this is when auto adjust features on the remote control come into their own.7.
Will several presenters use the equipment from different computers in the same presentation?Note: Many projectors have a single computer input, but there are more than a few that allow two computers to be hooked up. This can be useful if two people are coming together and have to use their own laptop as there will then be a seamless handover.
8. Staying up and running - how critical is it to have a loaner or replacement projector within 24 hours of a problem occurring?
Here the warrantee offered is key as many have two year "return to base" warrantees. However if you wish we can supply a "Loaner" warrantee for up to 3 years for a modest extra fee. With our prices you will probably find that you can have this included in still be cheaper than other suppliers
9. Will the computer presentation incorporate Photos/Video?
1. How about video clips and sound?
2. Will you also need video inputs to run video from a VCR~ Videodisc player, DVD, video camera, etc.?
10. For medium or large rooms, you need to fill the room with the sound.
Will you need external speakers? or to have your presentation tap into the room’s PA system? If you need speakers we can help. Visit our Accessories Page. For larger rooms InFocus who are the Worldwide number one manufacturer have come up with software which enables their projectors to be controlled via the network or company Intranet. i.e The projector in a conference room can be turned on and off automatically and if there are a number of conference rooms throughout the UK you can link to video conferencing and control several presentations all over the UK at the same time from a home ISDN line via the Company Intranet.
